just need to know what kind of tank i have whether it is a 10g leader or a 10g long

The length and height would be different but its breeder (long) or high not leader and long. And I have never heard of a 10 gallon coming in those sizes, the smallest I heard was a 20.

If yours is 20x10x12, then its just a normal 10 gallon.

There actually are quite a few cichlids you can keep in a 10 gallon. My favorites are shell dwellers, which live in snail shells. They're fun to watch and less than 2 inches long. You won't be able to find them at Petsmart, but if you have a local fish store in your area they should stock them or be able to order them for you. Apistogramma and Rams are two more cichlids that could work. You can keep them with a school of small fish like tetras, danios, rasboras, or corys.

A 10 gallon leader is a regular size 10-gallon tank. A 10 gallon long is 10 gallons deep(going up and down).A 10 gallon wide is 10 gallons from left to right.

none the term "leader" is for marketing as in to lead in the customer in with a low price as in "lose leader"
