Condom is probably the safest, but also, there is a pill that's safe for breast-feeding mothers. Consult your OBGYN.

For the first six months or until you get your period back, the absolute safest birth control method is LAM (Lactation Amenorrhea Method). It is also 98-99% effective and the *easiest* method imaginable. Nurse your baby frequently, don't get your period back, don't give pacifiers, bottles, or *anything* other than breastfeeding, and you don't get pregnant for 6 months. If you start giving bottles or solids (not recommended for *baby* anyway), or after your first period, you need another birth control method.
After LAM is no longer applicable, you can use natural family planning (NFP), condoms, or a diaphragm.
You *can* use the Pill (there's no evidence that it will hurt your baby), but it can sometimes decrease your milk supply (although it is unlikely if you wait 6 months). The progestin-only pill (also called the "mini-pill") is less likely to hurt your milk supply, although it *can*, as well. Other hormonal birth control (patch, Depo Provera, hormonal IUD, etc.) is likewise a big maybe. Depo, in particular can be a problem, as if it *does* cause a problem, it's in your system for 3 months.
A non-hormonal IUD can also be used. There was some evidence a while back that it wasn't good for women after birth, but I haven't heard anything about it recently. I don't know if the evidence was disproven, or if people just decided not to talk about it anymore.
If you are interested in LAM or NFP, I would suggest you read _Taking Charge of Your Fertility_ by Toni Weschler. It will give you lots of information on using either method.

supposedly breast feeding is a form of birth control but it only works if you've been breastfeeding for 6 months straight very consistantly (at least 6 times a day) so instead of all that i was on the shot while i was breast feeding and my son is fine... to be safe ask a nurse or a doctor...

Before taking ANYTHING while breast feeding, your best bet will be to consult a physician.
For the most part...the people on Yahoo Answers are not physicians, everyone will have various opinions. Just because someone is doing it, does not mean it is safe.
It would be wise to speak with a physician.

use the mini-pill. It's progesterone only. You make enough estrogen by breastfeeding, so you need only to add progesterone. Becareful because you need to breast feed or pump every few hours or you can get pregnant. You also need to take the pill at the same time.
