A college degree is a certification of completing a course of advanced study in a particular field. Like a high school diploma says that you've completed your grade school education and know your stuff, a college degree says that you've taken advanced classes and know a particular field.

Your particular field is called your major, and most of your classes are in this major. You will also take some general curriculum of writing, math, etc. If you choose to spend some of your elective classes towards another field, you may be able to get a minor. Probably a better word for "major" is "concentration", which is what Harvard calls it: you concentrate on that field, although you will take classes in other fields.

There are different types of degree and degrees can be earned in many different subject areas.
Basically-

Associates degrees:
Take 2 years for of schooling and can be gotten at any community college (a cheaper option) or university. If you study, for example art history. You would get an Associate of Arts in Art History call an AA.

Bachelors Degree:
4 years of study. You can get them in science or arts. I'm a teacher and I have a Bachelor of Science in education (or BS). That means education is my "Major" (I have 30 hours in Education, each classes is worth a certain number of "Credit hours" usually 3. It has nothing to do with hours on a clock) I have a minor in English because I have more than 20 hours.

Masters degree (also called a grad or graduate degree)
This requires that you have a bachelors in something and is 2 more years of school and usually some type of large senior project. These only come from universities.

Doctorate or PhD (Doctor of Philosophy)
This is 2 more years after you have a master's degree (8 years altogether) of more expensive courses and a final project that averages about 300 pages. This will be reseach you do and must add new knowledge to the scientific community. After that your title changes and you are no longer Ms. Jane Doe, but Dr. Jane Doe or Jane Doe PhD. (This is NOT a medical doctor).

You can stack degrees of higher values or earn 2 degrees of the same type in different things. That means you can get a masters degree in education and another in psychology.

Hope this helps,
Amie

A college degree is a certificate of completion of that study you did. $4 years + Bachelor of Arts, which means you can read and write. It's worthless. Do another 2 years and you get a Masters. That means you can get into a decent high paying job. Then another 1-4 years and you get a Doctorate which means the world is your oyster and you can work for top salary at anything you want.
A Major is what courses you are studying more of to focus on medicine or math. A minor is the rest of the clumped up courses you take as a second interest, like basket weaving or art.

A college degree is proof that you have completed a course of study in college. A major is your primary focus in your studies. Most people major in something which interests them and which will help them get a job after graduating. For example, I wanted to be a teacher, so I majored in Elementary Education. Each major has certain course requirements. You will also have to take core classes everyone takes (at my school, we had to take English, Speech, Math, Philosophy, and Social Studies) and general education classes. You may or may not be required to take a minor (another area of interest, and I've not really figured out what good my Music minor has done for me...). It varies by college, so you should check with the college's office of records and registration, counseling center, and/or career services center.

A Double significant potential that the pupil will fulfill all standards for 2 majors, yet will earn one degree. for example: A pupil might desire to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree with the majors, Psychology and Human the two listed. A twin degree potential that the pupil has fulfilled all standards for the two levels and (frequently) the ranges would be diverse. for example one might earn a Bachelor of technological understanding in organization administration and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. A Minor potential that the pupil has finished some million/2 of all standards for a significant, yet did no longer decide directly to end the main. frequently a minimum of 18 credit are required; 12 of that would desire to be top branch (3 hundred-4 hundred point). regrettably, i'm blind to an internet site or e book that explains each thing you decide directly to be attentive to in super component. frequently, in case you circulate onto a school's website and look below the Undergraduate Catalog, you will hit upon a area approximately academic policies and all advice related to Grading, chickening out from a classification, academic Probation, Majors, Minors, degree, and so on. would be listed. *that would desire to ascertain, Human centers.
