During a c-section a procedure called an epidural is done. This involves inserting a needle into the spine and causing temporary paralysis via drugs. It's impossible to feel anything during the resulting surgery, even though you are awake for the procedure.

There is no pain during the c-section itself because they give you medication (most commonly an epidural) that numbs the area so you can not feel them cutting you. However once the medication wears off there is pain as with any surgery after the medication wears off.
The healing time is different for everyone. With all of my c-sections I had very little pain after the first day. And in fact was up and moving around the next day. I know people that had problems and pains for weeks afterwards.

If you are kept awake you are given a spinal block, very similar to a epidural, but more medicine. The block does just that, blocks all pain, that is until it wears off, then there is plenty of pain, trust you me.

Usually, a regional anaesthetic is applied via an epidural to prevent the mother from feeling pain, while avoiding sedating the infant (as might occur from general anaesthetic).

I had pain during my c-section the meds wore off why they were stitching me up. They had to give me morphine to get me through the surgery. The meds they give you basically numb the nerves from the waist down.

There is no pain because you receive a spinal block which deadens everything from where they give the block on down. It takes approximately 4 hours to get your feeling back.
