I need some ideas for my final year project. I have just completed my second year of BSc (Hons) Software engineering. I want to create something based on research, something that doesn't exist yet or to inprove existing technology by doing some research. I am happy to learn new programming languages or technologies.

Thankyou.

I have done Network Application Development (socket programming) in my second year as an optional module.

What about looking at Oberon and seeing if you can expand it to be able to take advantage of CORBA, COM/DCOM, or NET technologies.

From the sound of Oberon, it seems like it is really on the right track towards an object-oriented operating system and language environment.

Another idea would be to create a new object oriented data system so as to create an integrated multimedia object oriented data base in the operating system itself using Oberon programming language system but with an eye to compatibility with CORBA, COM/DCOM, or NET. Such a database would be wonderful if it had at least three major content-based indices for use: alphanumeric, Dewey Decimal (or some other library based system -- to get to topics, themes, motifs, etc.), and daily (seasonal, seasons of life) functionality - how a typical person would use these things and when issues. Some other indices that would be really wonderful would be UPCs, ISBNs, RFIDs, "Conversions for various standard measurements," prices, and price per unit. Another set of indices could be created for the types of media involved: Time for reaching the exact point in a song or video you need or want or the act, scene, and line within a screenplay or play, or the movement, bar, etc. within a piece of music, etc.

I know it is crazy talk to think that any one database integrated with an operating system could be created within the foreseeable future -- but somebody has to do it. Could you make it be able to provide various reporting abilities for topical searches too? Make it so that when you search for "leaves" in a Shakespearean play it pulls the data from not just the written play by line, but by scene and also by the time interval that relates to the subject not just in the textual play, but also in the mp3 recording of the play you have stored in your computer and also in the video file you have of the BBC version of the play. And while you are at it see what you can do about adding Knowledge Base functionality to the system.

What do you think? Crazy enough ideas for you? I have lots more.

Best wishes,
