A good first step would be to join a choir. Good places to look are places of worship and local colleges/universities, whose choirs will often take people from the community, particularly if they have any connection with the institution (e.g. student, alumnus, employee).
Then you can, for example, ask the director of the choir if they could recommend anyone. Particularly if the director is a professional.
Another possibility would be to go to the head of the voice department (particularly if you are interested in singing classical music) at a nearby university and ask for a few minutes of his/her time to assess your voice and ask for a recommendation of someone who is suitable for your level and will actually help rather than harm your voice.
If you are not interested in classical music, often music departments have a jazz section, and you could find out who the best teacher is in that section and do the same with that person.
Voice is one of those things that you need to be very careful and probably have supervision until you are quite advanced, because it is possible to injure yourself in a very subtle way that you might not know about until it is too late to do anything about it. I mean, you can't see your vocal cords, right? It is also very difficult to hear properly what is going on because it's going on inside your head.
My favorite remedy to help prevent injury is to make sure to have plenty of mint tea with plenty of honey on hand. My old voice teacher on the other hand swears by jasmine tea, so you just find what works for you. I think everyone probably agrees about the honey, however.
I wish you all the best; may God bless you in your endeavors.
