First off you have to understand that white people don't understand because they can't relate. This nation call America is a hypocrite, name me one time throughout history that America ever admitted to any of their wrong doing? Never! Why are people so blind to see that America is the biggest threat to the world, why? Because they been making and committing crimes since the beginning against other nations and still do it. Because they can justify all their action. Like when they took this land instead of admitting they were wrong the say it "happens" and since Indians are OK with it mean that it OK. When they, America killed millions of blacks and rob them of everything in everyway they say it "happens" they say bad thing have happen to the Jews, Irish, Hebrews, etc. "Everyone was mistreated at some point", by saying this makes that 400+ years of oppression OK because it "happens."

Now would they still feel the same way if a hate group of blacks started killing INNOCENT whites because that hate them. And then this Black hate group say "don't punish us because people kill people all the time for hate, so why should we be punished"
Why do they resent such crimes committed against them, but justify the crime committed against others?

So according to there concept it happens to everyone at one point or another so it okay to kill, shot, steal, rob, lynch, oppress people because it "happens". And any nation that does these things should not be punish because other nations do it all the time. As long as you let America believe that, not slavery but the oppression and deaths of many blacks not only during slavery but also the civil rights era. As long as America believe it's Ok then they will always pose a threat to the world. The moment you let crime be committed and go unpunish then you are only cheating yourself, if you don't stand up for what is right then you will place yourself in bondage.

They say the Indians don't talk about was happen to them because their OK with it. The Indian should be kings of this land and should be paid taxes to all Indains that live here. They don't because they let other dictate who they are and what they should have. But Blacks are different don't let anyone make you think that crimes and oppression committed angainst God's people is okay. The only reason to keep you a slave ethier physically or mentally is by keeping you a fool and void of truth. If you don't know truth then how can you be set free.

Wow... I think you have opened up a question that will probably get a lot of negative answers. You should ask your many black friends and see what they think. Blacks can get free college for not doing anything..whites can't You're wrong, you can get free college, you have to do well in school and get good grades and you can get paid to go to college. You can apply for grants and scholarships. Anyone can do that. Please don't say that the only reason Blacks make a living here is because of whites. All you are doing is showing your ignorance and lack of education. When you ask why people over in Africa can't come up with the same technologies we have... think about what you are asking. Third world countries aren't called third world countries for nothing. They have limited resources, limited commercialized products, limited wealth, war lords who control everyone, little opportunity for advancement other than sending their children here for college (where they do BETTER than children educated in America) they become doctors and lawyers and teachers. The technology question could be posed at whites as well. Why are the Chinese and Japanese producing far superior technology than whites? It's not because we don't have the same technology. It's all racist no matter which group you chose to single out. You asked why we don't have a white history month? Because history as a whole was recorded for white men by white men. Why don't we have a women's history month? We should just have a human history month and forget all our differences and the walls that we put up and embrace each other as human beings.

That is partly true, and you have some great answers. But consider this. Let's face it, the tribes in Africa were warring and enslaving each other long before the slave traders got there. Just like the tribes in the middle east, and just like the different tribes of native Americans.

The fact that you think you cannot trace your ancestry is no more or less true than the fact that I can't trace my ancestry. For both of us, there is only so far back we can go, and from there we should resolve to make things better in the future.

Light a candle, and get on with your life.

I believe this is important.
I wouldn't be surprised if you have a sincere interest in family history.
There are organizations out there that deal in finding out your family history, some are free others are not. Go ahead and look for them you will find them.
It is true that people of african descent have virtually no written history simply because slave traders didn't ask these people what their family lineage was and write it down. They didn't even care what their real name was and the buyer just gave them another name and the family surname. It doesn't help that the tribes these people were taken from usually had no written language.
This makes things difficult if not impossible.
One person I do know who knows your family line written down and cares about it is God.
I Promise you that if you do everything you can to collect information on your family line God will make up the difference even if he has to send an angel with the book that contains your family line in it that has been kept in heaven. You're important and your family is important.
God bless you and don't give up.

Why get so hung up on the past, it's just that. I'm Irish not the american kind but I think as a nation we have a fair idea about what hundreds of years of oppression can do and do you know what the best thing to do is let it all go because it doesn't do any good.

Anyway there are methods with DNA that allow you to trace back your heritage very exactly now, have you looked into it?

I think we know more about African American history than any other race in this country.

I DON'T know much about Irish-American history.....or Native-Americans, or Italian-Americans, or Jewish-Americans, or Asian-Americans, or Latin-Americans, etc, etc...

But I know A LOT about African-American history, and I'm not even Black!

And as far as tracing your history goes, most people (of any race) can't trace their history past their grandparents.....or Great-granparents if they're lucky.

Most importantly, most people (of any race) are more concerned about their present and their future rather than DWELLING on the past.

And WHAT MAKES YOU THINK that the decendants of Irish slaves (or any other race of slaves) have all the knowledge they need about their ancestors? It seems to me that Irish people today don't harp too much about their slavery past. They have a racial identity TODAY, and that's what matters. (I used the Irish in this example, but the same is true for any race who were once slaves in history)

You, as an African American, have a BETTER CHANCE of finding out about your ancestry more than any other slave in history. Slavery in this country was a relatively recent event (a few hundred years ago - at least 6 or 7 generations back). Again, most people can't even go past their grandparents!

You're complaining that you "can't trace your history," but I bet you're not even TRYING to trace your history!

If you were to actually put some EFFORT into tracing your history (if that's what's so important to you), then I'm sure you'll find many things about your history.

I understand your frustration, it pisses me off as well that I don't know where in Africa my family is from, where my last name came from, was it a master's last name or did my family create a new one? But I also agree with some of the other people that not ALL enslaved people can trace their history back. But for those who know at least what country they're from, or what kind of white person (Irish, French, Netherlands..etc), or Native American (Cherokee, Sioux, Black Foot), they'll never understand what its like to not know your heritage.

Blacks can trace there roots back to africa. What you need to do is make a family tree. Look for birth and death certificates until it stops. If you are a decendent of a slave you look for a copy of the receipt for the sale of purchase of a slave. Usualy it will go up to as far as the person who bought a slave right off the boat. Then you check the date of purchase and then check the logs of port entrees of slave ships. It will tell you which country the ship got the slaves from. Next(this is probably the easiest part) check which tribe ruled at that region of africa at the time, then find out which tribes were there enemies and/or tribes they overan and enslaved. My friend did this and found he is rooted to what is now Benin and one from western Nigeria. It cost him I think around 300 for all the birth and death certificates because they cost about 8 dollars each.

To get started, start with your parents and work your way up. i am doing that now and right now am as far as my great great grandparents and cost me about 80 dollars so far

As for slavery, you will find eastern europeans who were enslaved by turks and western europeans who were enslaved by barbary pirates(from north africa) who were never to be found. Turks had a thing for taking boys from slavic families and giving them muslim names. In north Africa you will often find people who are as white as any european yet the native population are berbers

Why don't you and the black hebrew, whine a little more. In my 5.5 years of college(history major) I never heard of the white man stealing slaves. When your race finally decides to join the other race on this planet the human race, it might actually accomplish something. Blaming ole whitey because your ancestors were sold to mine will get you nowhere. My ancestors helped build the railroads in this country, but I am not asking Union Pacific for any reparations!!! Quit listening to those fraudulent leaders Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, and pay a little more attention to what Bill Cosby is saying. Colin Powell and Condi Rice quit complaining about us white folk years ago. You want to know why racism still exists, because of twits like you who don't take any responsibility for their mistakes!!! It's always someone elses fault. Work hard, raise your kids(with your money), educate yourself, and quit blaming others!!! This is your only hope, us white folk quit listening to you guys after your black president ruined America!!!

WOW- I have to say that I am ashamed of my fellow whites for a lot of their answers and attitudes. All you did was to prove to the asker that what she states is there, IS in fact, there. You cannot, nor can I,understand what a black person goes through unless you are Black. So ask them, don't lecture them, say 'get over it" and tell them they're spoiled, lazy, etc. They've heard ALL of that before. A black person in America today can understandably be angry about the thing that they face. We as the majority race need to listen to and understand the minorities. Shame, shame shame on you guys for not even trying to understand.
On the other hand, blacks DO have to work with what they have, and there is a lot more available for them now than there was to their great-great grandfathers and even grandpas. There was a time when any black person who tried to get an education would likely have been killed for trying. Now, you can get that free- which makes me very very annoyed when I see the failure rate of largely black inner city school kids.
Let us not forget, black and white, that we fought a Great Civil War over the issue of slavery, and that hundreds of thousands of white men and black soldiers gave their lives in the name of freedom for all, and for the Union.

Why should it matter? Your here now so why waste your time? Look forwards not backwards! No offense or anything but I don't think you should let it bother you. Many people of European ancestry can't trace back to their past either. I come from African descent and I could care less! Besides...THERE IS "BLACK" CULTURE AND HISTORY! It sounds like you are trying to blame non-black people and it's no ones fault! So get over it! And stop being so angry!
