Please only serious answers! I am reading a very confusing book and I'd like to find non-mainstream sources (because mainstream scientists do not acccept this theory) which would explain this occurence at a level a non-scientist can understand. i know there are many stories that have come down through the ages referring to this catastrophe from various cultures all over the world, including Noah's ark. Can anyone guide me?

Thhank you, but not the Yucatan. This occurred much later in geological time. It hasto do with a "planetoid" traversing the solar system, affecting numerous planets and causing immense geological changes, fire and flood on Earth.

JT122, what you say is very interesting, thanks, but there are similar stories on other continents that correspond in content, if not time, to the massive flood in Mesopotamia, also stories all over the world that have great similarity to the story of Lucifer being thrown out of heaven. All had supposedly taken place around 11,500 years ago. There were supposed to have been crustal disturbance so great that mountains were formed and land masses fell below sea level. ( Brings to mind Atlantis)

What I am looking for are books or articles that are written for a curious non-scientist so that I can get a clear picture of what has been postulated. Thanks

I think i know what it is. It was probably a Comet. Comets are masive streaks in the sky that we can see from earth. Almost all ancient civilizations talk about comets. The ancients thought that comets were the work of evil and meant bad things were going to come. Ancient astronomers could predict when comets would come, so many sacrifices, human or not, were made before the comet arrived. Comets were not part of the normal every day thing and it scared many people. Other things that might have done this are lunar and solar eclipses.

In reference to Noah's Ark: A long time ago, there was a massive flood of Mesopotami(Iraq), where some of the first civilizations developed. To the people living there, Mesopotami was the "world". So when it flooded, the world had flooded. This flood was massive and washed out entire cities and killed thousands. We know about this by very very thick layers of sediment deposited by floods.

If it's confusing and not accepted by mainstream scientists,... doesn't that tell you something?

And if you want some serious answers give us more info. It's hard to search for info on a catastrophe that happened maybe 11500 years ago. Is there a name for this occurence? Who is the author? Throw us a bone

It sounds like you are thinking of the different possible explanations for the extinctions of species and the cause of fossils. They are generally thought of as being due to meteor impacts, but other possibilities include

1) widespread volcanic eruptions and release of poisonous gasses from underground. This would have the result of diluting the atmosphere and the release of huge amounts of carbon 14 would result in changing the C-14 ratio, causing fossils from before this period apear much older than those after it

2) intense solar flares (causing the Moon rocks to glaze over, as seen in the Smithsonian) leading to evaporation of oceans leading to icecap formation on Earth. This would cause hurricanes of live steam, killing lots of species, and possibly causing Noah's flood.

3) planetary impact with a cloud (nebula?) of water vapor. This could also have caused Noah's flood, and its absence would allow increased solar radiation in the atmosphere to create increased amounts of C-14, as above, so that fossils before that time would appear much older than fossils after that time.

4) the near passage of another planet (without collision!) would result in tides being dragged clear around the planet and would leave little or no other physical traces than the displaced waters and the sediments.

The immediate presence of the same (vertical) log, turned to coal in one horizontal layer and to silicified wood in another horizontal layer, shows that the mineralizing sediments did not accumulate slowly over a period of time (the log would have rotted away) and that the pressures were intense enough to convert the log to coal. This argues for a flood.

Since there are several different candidate catastrophes, you are not likely to find them in a single book. Everybody seems to have their favorite. Neptunism (as it used to be called) lost popularity compared to vulcanism as a cause of rock and fossil formation. I believe it was supposed to be very popular back in Goethe's day. You might try searching for it under that term, but I don't know if you will find very recent references.

Einstein suggested that 11,500 years ago the rotation axis of the earth got a new position all of a sudden. Why? ???
