Ok so heres a little something I know about, considering I wrote me my masters thesis on Dracula. However for those not so involved heres the short version.
As most of you have said Dracula was really Vlad Tepes from romania. Correct, but, some facts are a little off. For example, no one really knows his last name. The word Tepes in old romainian means impaller, hence why he was also called Vlad the impaller. He was in more properly knowen as Vlad the III. His father was king of Romania and was Vlad II. His father started a club if you like of nobles and counts etc.... around the place to form a protection against the muslim Turks who constaintly tried to take over Romania a christian country. This club was known as the order of the Dracul. Dracul of course being the Romanian word for Dragon.
So there was only about 8 or 9 of them in this club, making the allience very weak.
Anyways when Vlad III was a boy him and his brother were kidnaped by the Sultan of Turkey and taken to Turkey to be slaves of the Sultan. By the way his brothers name was Radu which is referenced in holloywoods abismal Van Heilsing movie a few years ago. Anyways after about 10 years or so, Vlad managed to escape the Sultan and made it back to Romainia to claim his fathers throne, which he did succsessfully. Because of this, he was called Vlad Dracula meaning son of the dragon by the people. Vlad was a devout Catholic, and as such did all he could to uphold Gods law by not standing for any sin. Thus if you committed a sin he killed you by placing you on a spike, as has already been mentioned.
This however came to help Vlad later on in 1492 (yes thats right the same year that Columbis, supossidly discovered America) when he faught the Turks biggest invasion since he was kidnaped as a child. The turks beat Vlad all the way across Romainia and back into the forests where he had built Castle Dracula (which is now a tourist attraction). However when the Turks reached the castle the surrenderd without too much hesitation despite having an army which out numbered Vlad easily by 10 to 1. The reason they surrendered is because of what is now known as the forest of the impalled where Vlad had 2000 or so Turkish soldiers impalled on spikes outside the castle. Seeing this the Turkish army got the willies, to put it nicely and decided to give up.
So for more information about Vlad, theres quite a lot if you look at google.
The other Dracula however was of course the charactor made by Bram Stoker, who was Irish, not English as previously stated by others. Stoker of course claimed during his life that the charactor of Dracula wasent based on Vlad but on a dream that he had one night. A story which is debated by vampire historians all over the world today. The common reasons are thus,
1st Stoker was renowned for keeping notes on his stories, thus making easy research for historians. However in the case of Dracula very little notes were kept at all. People who argue that Stokers charactor was based on Vlad argue this because in the story when Johnathan goes to the caslte Dracula talks to him about a great war which remarkibly resembles that of the war that Vlad undertook against the Turks.
Even today no one can say for sure what or who Stoker really based his charactor on.
If however as the last part to this answer, you are talking about the first Dracula in film histroy, then that would be an actor credited as Max Srechek by the director Fredirich Wilhelm Marnau from the film Nosferatu (Germany, 1922) However as an interesting point here Max Srechek was not the actors real name and due to the cout case over the film started by Bram Stokers wife, no one really knows his real name. It is interesting to note that the word Srechek in German means fright or terror and I suspect that Marnau credited Max with this name because he was playing count dracula, although his name was count Orlock in the film becuase he failed to gain the writes of the story from Stokers wife. Anyways the word means fright or terror and Orlock who is the vampire is the person that we as the audience are meant to be afraid of.
Also just as an added extra, the pronounciation of the word is not too dissimilar to the work Shrek, the name of the popular film with the green orgre dude. Interesting how the charactor of Shrek is also the person who we as the audience is meant to be afraid of.... a reference to Marnau and or Dracula perhaps? perhaps indeed.

Vlad Tepes (in Romanian)... the real name of the count.. the vampire story is a myth, a fantastic story, but no more.. and the story was not even created by a Romanian, but by a British dude
the real story goes like this: (i am Romanian... and grew up there.. i kinda know some history, too) he was a count that was really feared by the criminals of that era. he was bloody and merciless with outlaws. the reason the myth was born is because he was the type of ruler that killed on the spot, no fair trial to any who crossed the line; if you were to live back then and you were found raping or man slaughtering, you would be impaled for your crime right there and then. ppl with spikes through them were strategically placed in squares and public places as example and warning for other who might have been tempted to commit crimes. no, Vlad never drank blood or took baths in bathtubs filled with blood... BUT he did manage to have the lowest crime rate in Transilvania for the period in which he ruled. and he wasn't a king or an emperor, but a count

Dracula was a Romanian count. He became so notorious because he once used a very bad strategy against enemy - he destroyed many Romanian villages, poisoned water, and so managed to get killed many Romanian villagers. He was originally from Erdeli (Transylvania).
