Some hard drives omit sound while running a large application, like coreldraw, PDF or photoshop. I have seen that happen in old seagate drives. Better defragment your drive & uninstall all unwanted software application. As this would ease some pressure on drive. For screen saver, avoid using 3D savers. Use default windows they are light on drives.

I agree with Ruzveh, it can be CPU fan. When you open a large application the fan speed increases as per requirement, to keep the CPU cool. Specially when you start virus scan.

I know what you mean. If you have a large harddrive like 200gb with no partitions and just the C: drive your hd has to spend more time rotating to find the information. Or if your computer is idle then you start up a program like Photoshop it will also cause the hd to ratate alot faster.

Or the problem might be the fan. I have still have the stock fan in my computer and when ever a new program starts or i boot up it gets really loud and annoying.

happened to my hard drive also... but as you sound like it might be really loud.. mine was like a manual car where u shift gears... slow down the car and change gears, thats wht my old hard drive used to do the motor slows down and starts to pick up speed and it crashed my computer alot... somehow i ended up with that HDD for about 5 more months till i brought a 200gb maxtor then i returned it and got a seagate 400gb for 10 bucks more at Fry's electronics. u have a bad motor its not gonna be long till its in the trash can. hehe i say if you can run the computer for a while check when it will die from a program from www.downlaod.com if you dont get much time to spare i say you should go buy a new hard drive. it would be good. like a 80gb for a normal user 160 for web designer, songs, movies, 300gb for gamers and above 300gb would be for games, movies, songs and other crazy stuff that u might download. hehe peace :))

this could be a hard drive fault, with bad sectors on the hard drive i would advise doing some testing of the hard drive u can do this by running scandisk from system tools in accesssorires.

sounds like your hard drive isn't going to around much longer if it's making noise like that. You shouldn't even be able to hear it making any noise at all.
