Mine always did the best when watered in the early morning before the sun hits them. You want them to begin drying before direct sunlight as the moisture on the leaves will scortch them.

Early in the morning is the best time for watering any vegetables. Water at the bottom so as not to get the leaves wet. In this way, the sun won't burn the leaves. If you water in the afternoon or late evening, you may have problems with fungus or wilt. Also, wet ground at night will bring on the slugs.

water them early in the morning and late afternoon. The tomato leaves get burned if you water them midday when the sun is the hottest.

Best in the mornings before it gets too hot. It's best if you build a small trough--plant on a mound, trough around it--also, don't get the leaves wet (promotes fungus.)
