Bristol is in Gloucestershire.

In the 1970s the government changed all the counties around and created Avon, for the Bristol conurbation.

Old Trafford is in Greater Manchester, and Lancashire still play there. Egbaston is now in West Midlands and not Warwickshire.

Before Avon existed, Bristol was in the county of Gloucestershire - though why the cricketers use that badge instead of that of Gloucester, I'm not 100% sure, perhaps back in the 1800s there was less of a cricket following that far north and the county side first played in Bristol, perhaps??

Gloucestershire CCC have their base at the County Ground, Nevil Road, Bristol. Bristol is by far the largest and most historically significant city in the traditional county of Gloucestershire ('Avon' is a comparatively recent invention), so it is probably right that the county cricket side should be based there. And thus the coat of arms on the badge is probably appropriate as well...
