When u r a citizen of a nation, howsoever big or small it may be, u naturally feel bound to ur nation - much in the same way that an employee feels bound to his company. In the latter case, the bond may be due to the remuneration or the friends at workplace or the type of work that the employee finds satisfying, but in the former case, the bond is much on the emotional lines. The national anthem is such a bond. I belong to India and India, being quite a big country with such absolutely diverse cultures, has a national anthem that finds a way to bind all the different people together due to their mention in the lyrics and also the recognition of their contribution to India as a Nation, making the dream of one of the gr8est revolutionaries of India true - Unity in Diversity. This gives us a feeling of BELONGING, whatsoever region or religion we may be from.

People memorize the lines to really powerful songs representing their country. When a whole crowd sings a song together before a football game, it gives people a strong feeling of patriotism and nationalism. Anthems are much more important to countries then people ever realize, and the creation of anthems is just another aspect the history of that country.

Dear friend,

National anthems like all national monuments and symbols provide scope for collective expression of patriotic fervour.

They do not by themselves create any patriotism but they provide a medium of expressing the sense which is already present in the person's mind.

They are very much like the idols of gods and religious symbols which are worshipped to evoke a sense of godliness.

America's National Anthem makes me cry every time I hear it, and I'm the least patriotic person in America. The beauty of the music mixed with the words makes me happy that our country was founded and that I'm here. It brings me just a tiny moment of joy.

Not a clue because does anyone actually know their national anthem the whole way through off-by-heart? I don't know anyone who does! XS. But at events where it gets sung it makes everyone sort of feel part of something i guess.

In the US, just the words of our national anthem make me think of those who have come before, those that sacrificed their lives to make this country a place to be proud of.

Of course, this was way before our country got so screwed up.

Listen to the words and wonder what it was like when the song writer put them together in a time when that nation was fighting for it's independence.
