If Federer continues to play beyond his prime (as sports figures sometimes do) , yes - he could get knocked off. But, as long as he continues to perform at full strength as he is now (despite his French Open loss today to the "master of clay") I don't see it happening. If Federer chooses to continue to play for a few more years, his uniform will forever hang from the rafters of ever major tournament site as the best player of all time. And that is saying a lot!

It's going to be tough.
Yes, Nadal beat him to win the French Open and has a great record against the world number 1, but Nadal still remains very much a clay court specialist. As such, its going to be hard for him to amass the points necessary to take over the #1 ranking. He has had some success on hard courts, but is yet get past the numbered rounds at a major other than the French Open.
In addition, the next Slam up is Wimbledon. Federer will be back in the position of favorite to win and, if past performances are anything to go by, Nadal is unlikely to be a huge factor there.
As for the others. Roddick has a dismal record against Federer and seems to be in a bit of a slump right now. Safin is outrageously talented but has had injury problems and lacks the mental stability to make himself a week in- week out threat for the top spot. Hewitt seems to be distracted by marriage and lacks the big weapon a player needs to dominate the tour.
Maybe his toughest challenge will be from one of the new guys climbing up the rankings. Maybe a Monfils or a Murray? Only time will tell.

If Nadal can maintain upsetting Federer even on grass & hard surfaces, he definitely will be the next no 1. But Nadal is not as all-rounded as Federer. Federer should just put Nadal in his 2nd place & be no 1. I mean he isn't no 1 as long as Nadal keeps beating him. And this French open was the time to do it. Now he has to wait till next year. Will he maintain his three grand slam titles & win the French Open next year? If he does, he will be the greatest ever! The stakes just got higher.
Roger that!

It will take may be 4-5 years looking at Federer's current stamina. Nadal is only clay court specialist. He gets beaten easily in the opening rounds of other grandslams even by a rookie. A difference of nearly 3000 points proves this. Federer is mostly unbeatable on other surfaces coz of his all round game/clean & amazing shots though Safin & Nalbandian can stretch him to a decider. Nadal will have to drastically improve his game on hard courts to dethrone Roger.

No one seems to have the all around tennis game that Federer has. But he has been beaten by significant players; Safin, Nalbanian; Davydenko. I think the player who gives him the most grief now is Nadal. It will take someone who has similar skills as all of them to de-throne him as world #1

Hopefully soon. I think Nadal would be able to do it soon, but since clay court season is over, maybe not. But it gets boring after a while, Federer being number one all the time and winning all the grand slams everytime.

I was very disappointed by Federer today and have just got how difficult it can be sometimes for him! I mean he is vulnerable sometimes. I hope he'll stay on top as long as possible! Anyway, whatever happens, I just hope the next n°1 won't be Nadal!!!
