Please don't tell me "bacteria and virus" and the such. I already know that. I want to know WHY is it that we are on this earth with the 'ability' to get sick? Is there some meaning to being sick? Is being sick some evolved ability for us to skip school and work? (Note, this is filed under Philosophy.)

i think people get sick to appreciate what they have even more and if its a fatal thing it could be to make the people on earth less as the world is over populated, but i think t is to make you look after yourself better and as i said to appreciate what you have in life and all your abilities! live life to the FULLEST!!

Simply and compassionately put: We get sick cuz we have bodies and bodies are susceptible to sickness. It's simply a part of having a body on this earth plane. I don't think there is a meaning to being sick(although dealing with sickness CAN make people more compassionate to other people's pain and can even give life meaning. It can also be a life altering experience for the positive in some people). I don't think it's an evolved ability to get out of work or school but I had the ability to fake sick to get out of middle school way back when. ;)))

It is duly noted that your question is filed under philosophy, but that does not mean it is a philosophical question. This question should be filed under biology. Look at some of my questions filed under philosophy to see some questions that better fit the category.
In my opinion there is no deeper meaning to sickness other than the underlying reason behind the sickness. If you have a bad gene, you could get cancer. If you are in an environment that is more friendly to infectious organisms, you could get sick. If you don't wash your hands, you could get sick. None of the examples above point to any higher purpose of getting sick vs. not getting sick; they point more towards circumstances which make you more or less likely to get sick, and by Occam's Razor the simplest answer is the best.
Don't read to much into something that is not there.

i will gladly answer your question with this.
It all starts with how we think, what we eat, the pollution, and radiation. i could fill you in on details but there is so much to go over I'll give you the joy of looking this stuff up, on how it affects the human anatomy.
Let me ask you this though, if there were let's say, no pollution, no processed food's just natural live food from the ground with no chemical's and no radiation and always being happy do you think there would be a reason for us to get so sick?
why we are here for true reason. To live perhaps? we create how we want to live and that becomes the story of our life. Weather you are happy or not is up to you. Perhaps if we could not get sick we would all be god's? there is always a lesson to be learned.
We have created our sicknesses with everything that has happened.

I actually think your question is interesting so ignore the negative posts.

I once read that people who never get sick have a higher rate of cancer. As if it was *healthy* for your body to periodically go into 'clean-up' mode because it would not only get rid of the germs making you sick but maybe other more dangerous problems like cancer.

I often don't mind getting sick because it gives me time to rest and I feel better than I did before getting sick.

Life eats life. If you are not a plant, you kill something to eat. So does bacteria.

Viruses are more bizarre. They are not even alive until they get into cells. They are nothing but RNA in a "plastic" wrapper.

So, WHY. Crap. Don't ask me. You find God, you ask him. He was hiding behind my couch the other day, but my dog chased him away.

We are life forms. Blame the apple or Pandora's box, or just the developement of life if you like, but where ever you go, there you are.

We are here. We got the mean little crunchy things, and we have to deal with them.

I am going to check behind my couch again just in case God is still there... Damned! A $10 million dollar check from Publishers Clearing House! And all I have to do is buy a magazine! Woo Ho!

Personally, I think getting sick is not an 'ability', it is a weakness. People get sick because we are made that way, I mean, drink beer all day, and you'd feel the effects later. What I mean is, I think it's God's little way of saying, "Okay, here's your body. Do whatever you want with it, but I'll have to remind you, there is a limit." Our body has limits. It reminds us to fix up our act, take care of ourselves, and do what's right for us.

We become sick because like many other things in life, we become stronger for having suffered through hardships. If you get sick by one form of bacteria or virus then your body fights off the infection and if you ever encounter that same parasite then your body will know how to fight it off again.

Here's the real answer...

After mans fall with the sin of Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden, a curse was placed on all of creation. That curse included a bunch of things that didn't exist prior to the curse; thorns, painful child-birth, hard work to survive and sickness and disease. It's a result of sin. God changed our physiology after that first sin of price and he changed the organisms that existed on the earth at that time. We went from living together with everything in harmony, to being in battle with everything.

So the first sin was the beginning of disease, sickness, etc. It is a constant reminder of sin and what heaven will be like after all sin is abolished by Jesus Christ.
