The top of the pond is warmer, and the bottom is cooler. If you have had some hot weather lately, the top of the water may be too warm for them to be comfortable. Try checking on them very early in the morning. If they are at the top more in the morning, but go lower as the day goes by, that is your most likely problem. Consider getiing some pond plants that will shade the water like water lilies.

There are a variety of reasons why a goldfish stays on the bottom of the pond. They might find it particularily comfortable to sleep down there. Or there may be some delicious plants down there too. Or perhaps they feel safer being on the bottom, perhaps something was trying to eat them. Fish are interesting creatures to watch and learn from.

Enjoy your fish and they can provide you with much pleasure for years to come.

Try finding a book about Goldfish in your local Pet Store. The book(s) could provide you with more fascinating things about them that you didn't know before. Good luck!

they probly stay down there because there is food for them down there and they might feel safer because it is usually dark at the bottom.
