Only the CSMU portion of the Black Box is designed to actually be "indestructive".

The CSMU can survive extreme heat, fire, violent crashes and pressure conditions. It is made of three layers, with the innermost layer containing the memory cards covered by thin aluminum. Over this, it has a layer made of dry silica 1-inch thick, used for high temperature insulation. The outermost layer consists of a stainless steel shell that is 0.25 inch thick. Some black boxes have a titanium shell.

Imagine trying to do that to the entire airplane or even the passenger compartment. If you tried to expand the scale to that size, you would end up with a plane that would be too heavy to get off the ground and be too expensive to build.

I believe you really wanted to know what kind of material that black box is made of? Am I correct? I just wanted to be sure because no one gave you an answer as to what kind of material it's made of and how much it weighs. All I see people telling you, with no real knowledge, that it would be too heavy to fly with no kind of scientific backing to their answers. I mean if y'all don't really know the answers, don't PRETEND like you do!! In addition to my last comment, no one even gave a good source to where and how they supposedly know WHATEVER they are saying. No need to be rude to people who are just asking simple non offensive questions. I'd like to know the REAL answer to this question too. It could also be the size and location of those black boxes that cause them to survive crashes. The material that planes are currently made of could be heavier that the material that they use to make the black boxes of. Did y'all think about that? If you're going to give a hypothesis.......let it be and EDUCATED guess!! Do you know your source? Did you research your answers people? Thank You. God BlessY'all

hi friend!
its name is black box but it is bright yellow or orange in colour!!! so that it can easily be located even under water.
it is placed at the tail section of an aircraft as that portion is considered to be the safest to survive a crash.
as for the other details, other friends have told you.
it is made of steel but aircraft is made of aluminium. so, you can imagine about the weight it would add if a complete plane is made of that stuff!! also, it is heat resistant, fire proof, shock proof, water proof and damp proof!
it stores all the information of the flight right from the moment the aircraft is turned on till the time the aircraft is shut down. it stores parameters like aircraft altitude, temperatute, outside temperature, pressure difference, heading, direction, turning, banking, sawing, ralling, pitching and all the other details. it even records the voice of cabin crews including pilots!!!

hope, i have answered ur querry!for further detail, u can mail me at mangeshome1982@yahoo.co.in

happy flying! and pray to god that no aircraft should ever crash!!

I believe that black box records information that would be useful should something happen...things like cabin pressure, I'm guessing also atmospheric conditions....
If the whole plane were made out of the same material it would probably be too heavy to fly.
Same as why they don't make whole body bullet-proof suits (too expensive to make, too heavy, no free movement)

It would be too hard to make a giant black box with people inside fly! HAHAHAHA!:)
