you find the factors of 2x^2 and find the factors of 6, then you find which combination of them gives you the -x when they are multiplied - that is your answer. In this case your factors would be 2x and x for the 2x^2 and 2 and 3 for the 6 you would think like this (2x _)(x _). You want a difference of one for your middle term so you play with the combos. 2(2) is 4 which would leave the other to be 1(3) which is 3. 3 and 4 leave a difference of 1 and since you need a negative 1 the product of 4 has to have a neg. So your answer would be (2x+3)(x-2). I hope that makes sense - it's easier to show than type.

First you multiply the front 2 with the back 6. (2 x 6 = 12)
This means you need to find two numbers that multiply to get "12" and also equal to -1 (the middle x tells you that it's -1)
This means it's -4 and 3 are the two numbers.
2x^2 - 4x + 3x - 6
then you factor out the common numerals on each half, so you should get:
2x( x - 2 ) + 3( x - 2)
Always make sure the numbers in the bracket are the same too.
Take the front two numbers that are outside the bracket:
(2x + 3) (x - 2)
And make it equal to 0.
Your x values should be: 2 & -3/2

Think about two numbers that can be multiplied to get -6 and be subracted to get -x, which is -1. So, those numbers are -3 and 2. Then you'll factor out 2x^2 and get 2 and 1. So you go....
(2x - 3) and (x + 2).
