Probably because the idea of their loved ones' spirit walking around is easier to believe than the idea of little green men with big features. Maybe they just know more about ghosts and spirits than space. Maybe they're one of those people that say we ARE the only planet that inhabits intelligent life. Flying saucers might seem a little far-fetched. Maybe they have witnessed something that can be explained as a ghost, but haven't come in contact with something from outerspace. There are tons of reasons, it usually just depends on the personality and the beliefs of the individual.

Wherever I go, I meet up with ghosts and spirits. They are always there bothering me. I go to the supermarket, spirits. I go to the gas station, they're there-ghosts. I can't seem to shake them.
Whenever I call a plumber or electrician, they come with the spirits. My utility bill has included the spirits as does my heating bills.
I finally found out where the spirits hang out.
The Department of Taxation and Finance and the Internal Revenue Service. And, whenever I complain, someone always reminds me of how lucky I am to be living in the United States, to which I reply, "that's true. I'm grateful to be an America".
That's the spirit !

Ghosts and spirits are all around us. Aliens are out there somewhere. It's easier to believe in the things which are all around.

It's called religious indoctrination.
We have been programmed to believe in "spiritual" beings and to trust these beliefs even more than science itself... I know... sounds silly, right?
But on the other hand, I think there is a large number of people who believe in both. I think that when a person's mind is open to one posssibility then they are open to other things as well.

because more people see ghost and is is more publicised that aliens which not alot of people have seen and the possibility of aliens is so secretive (Area 51) and stuff like that
