i have just manged to fix a browser hijack, from a site called "freeze.com",luckily they had given a uninstaller which was lucky and spy-bot only threw up 2 entries which were easily cleaned
however is there a utility to stop "browser hijacking",such as a sheild,or is there a free anti-virus with this built in,the p.c in question was running avast4 and did not block the browser hijack
i have only ever had 2 hijacks and have been lucky enough to be able to fix them
if anyone knows of a anti-browser-hijack program,i would be grateful of the name
thanks

I just d/l the Kerio Firewall-I LOVE IT! It's beats the tar out of Windows firewall. I was at one time using the firewall built into my Iolo anti-virus, but it was just too, too complicated.

I have "beefy security", as one tech told me, but this Kerio is a great addition. I'm not much for Spy-bot (had it), it was giving me a lot of false positives and it was also reading my SpyOnThis as being a problem-it isn't-it's anti-spyware scanner/remover. On the Spy-bot I had to put everything back in that it deleted as there were some things that were legitimate applications and Spybot disabled some important things. I then cleared the program out, rebooted, and ran my SpyOnThis.

Browser hijackers are insidious and nasty. I once had to completely restore my system to factory because of one (this was before I had the SpyOnThis. It kept replicating itself within my system, even on deletion. I could find it on the HiJackThis log, but couldn't ALL the components on my system; believe me, I tried. Since I got the SOT, it removes everything, totally and completely. The only prob with SOT is that ya have to pay for it. Oh well, it was worth it.

There is a program called Hijack This that if used with an anti-syware tool such as Ad-Aware will remove the spyware on your computer. Once a browser (homepage) has been hijacked, various toolbars are often installed with the spyware. Removing these can be a lengthy process depending on how what exactly is installed.

The problem with spyware is for some reason that it gets installed on your computer by searching web sites and clicking on programs and windows allows it to install it on your computer

a good way to help combat this - is when you are surfing the internet do it in a LIMITED ACCOUNT and not signed in as adminstrator

As a limited account user windows will automatically not allow any programs to be installed on to your computer and write to the registry

According to experts, not logging in your PC as an administrator will give you added protection 70 to 80 per cent of the most common adware and spyware

another way is to create a virtual desktop - with this if you run into any problems you just delete this desktop - and all of you data and personal info will be safe - MUST have a high spec pc though

have a look at

Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to I.E.

The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out. Either of these firewalls are free for personal use and stop unwanted incoming and outgoing traffic. You choose which programs are allowed to access the internet. They are both fairly easy to use and updated regularly.

I have never heard of Spy On This, is it American? get it checked out before you install as there are some companies that install spyware and find loads, you then pay them to remove it. Legitamate antispyware is usually free.
Never download from any source other than the official company website.

1. Use Firefox
2. Install AVG anti virus and Kerio Personal firewall.
3. Use Ad-aware and Spybot Search and Destroy.
4. The Tea-Timer feature of the new Spybot prevents browser hijack.

All the above are free, and highly recommended.

The best hijacker stopper I have encountered is Windows Defender. It nabbed two that Norton missed.

you can get it free from Microsoft. Go here to check it out & get it - http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

You can run Windows defender along with your anti virus and spyware programs.
