Penmaster is incorrect about the literal caps. It used to be the case, but no longer.

It means appearances. At international level, players are actually awarded a cap (as in one you put on your head) for each appearance they make, hence the term caps used for appearances.

i think it's the number of appearances a player made for his international game ( playing for his country, not his club )
