I mean, I should know this, and I must, because I use it correctly... (at least I think I do, I've written 100 essays, and a prof has never said anything), but I don't actually know the difference. Do you?

Please learn to use a dictionary. It's sad that a university student hasn't figured this out, and it's sadder still that the professors neglect to correct their students.

Affect, as quoted from source below:

"to produce an effect on; influence....move; touch the feelings of.... pretend to have or feel...assume the character or manner of...show a preference or liking for...

" 'Affect' should not be confused with 'effect; which means 'to bring about, to accomplish', e.b. 'The government effected great changes.' Note also that 'effect; is commonly used as a noun as well as a verb."

Effect, as a noun =
1. result or consequence of an action.
2. efficacy (the drug had little effect).
3. an impressions produced on a spectator,
and so on.

Effect, as a verb =
1. bring about an event or accomplish an intention or desire.

As a verb, to affect means 'to act upon or have an influence on', as in "Sunless days affect my mood." It can also mean 'to make a show of; to put on a pretense of; to feign; to assume' as "to affect ignorance." To effect means 'to bring about or create' as in "to effect a change." If you affect something, you do to it. If you effect something, you cause it to be. Advertising might affect the sales of widgets (by causing them to increase), or it can effect sales (bring them about) if, for example, there were no sales at all to begin with. As a noun, effect means 'result, consequence, outcome'. An effect is that which is produced when you affect something: "The poem affected me deeply; it really had an effect on me." Affect as a noun is a term from the field of psychotherapy meaning 'the emotional complex associated with an idea or mental state'. Keep in mind that usually if you want a noun, the word you want is effect, but if you want a verb, the word you want is affect.

Affect: "to produce or have an effect upon"
"the conscious subjective aspect of an emotion considered apart from bodily changes"

Effect: "power to bring about a result : INFLUENCE the content itself of television ... is therefore less important than its effect"

You could say, The effect of the movie was...
or, That movie really affected me.

The two words are very close.
