I was talking to a female relative today and she told me that the earlier and girl first sees her period the earlier she will experience her menopause. I've heard this before and I'm convinced it's a myth, does anybody else agree with this?

I know I could ask my G.P but I'm only 23 and not in hurry to find out.

I've heard that the earlier you start your periods the LATER you start your menopause.

However, I've also been a medical student for the past 6 years and will qualify as a doctor in a week (hopefully!) and haven't come across any reliable evidence........and it's certainly not in any of the textbooks I've read! The average age of the menopause in the UK is 51.8 years, but the average age of menarche (start of periods) keeps getting younger, so I'd have to say the two probably aren't particularly related.

The menopause happens when the ovaries stop responding to certain hormones from the brain, and so eggs stop maturing regularly. There is a drop in the levels of estrogen and progesterone (the two female sex hormones produced by the ovaries). It is this fall in hormone levels that causes symptoms of menopauseIt's not known why the menopause starts earlier in some women than others, although inherited factors are thought to play a part. Women who smoke go through the menopause an average of two years early. Surgery that removes the ovaries causes an immediate menopause. When the menopause happens before the age of 40 it is considered to be a premature menopause, and usually requires medical treatment.. starting your period doesent mean you will menapause early...

I would say that is a myth.

There are a lot of factors that could cause an early menopause, which includes family history, poor diet etc.

Don't forget, some women sail through their menopause without any problems at all.

At 23, I wouldn't go worrying about it just yet.

Take care

It IS true, I started my periods when I was about 10, I'm now only 32 and I started the peri-menopause last year. It does happen, it IS possible.
