It is a determination of how much heat is transferred equivalent to the amount of heat required to melt a ton if ice in a period of time. Tonne means the unit has been rated in the metric system.

Its a measure of air coniditioning capacity. A ton of refrigeration is the cooling capacity of a short ton (907 kg) of ice at 0 C metling over a 24 hour period. Its equivalent to 3,510 Watts.

Tonne means the capacity of the AC.Normally it is said that for a room size of 12X12 feet one 1.5 tonne capacity AC is sufficient to fulfil your requirements.

i assume it's "ton" as is used to refer to the size of an A/C unit, and one ton is about 12000 btuh
