There are such guitars, i have one, it is quite nice, but for a starter it isnt a wise choice. The cheap ones are crap and good ones are expensive. If you want a cheap starter guitar I highly suggest checking out www.musiciansfriend.com. They have good quality guitars for pretty cheap, Once you get better, if you still want an acoustic/electric i suggest an Ovation Celebrity, when you play w/o an amp it sounds acoustic, with an amp it sounds electric. Most acoustic/electric sound acoustic both ways.

Here's the best advice I can give, and I am a player myself. For starters, the answer is yes. You can buy an acoustic guitar that has an electric pickup. There are several models around in many price ranges.
DO NOT buy a cheap one, a used one, or one of those "Esteban" crappy Chinese made guitars. DO NOT buy any guitar that you cannot try out before you buy it. Go to your local guitar shop (preferably a locally owned one), or a store like Guitar Center, etc where you can at least try the items first. Tell them what you're looking for, and that you are a beginner. They will show you different choices in different price ranges.
Get the best one your budget will allow... not the priciest one, but the best one...the one that feels the best and has the nicest tone with low "action" (short distance between the string and fretboard from top to bottom...means greater ease of fingering the strings). This is why i suggest a local shop...these guys are players themselves, and actually set up the guitar to be played, rather than just pulling it out of the box and hanging it on the wall. You might pay a couple extra bucks but in return you will get an instrument that will be playable and last a long time. To summarize...if you are serious about becoming a player, don't cheap out on the guitar. Buy the best one you can afford. Cheap guitars are hard to play and will cause you to get frustrated and quit. Then it will just be a pricy dust catcher in the corner. Also, consider taking lessons rather than trying to learn on your own. A good foundation is important if you want to be a good player.
Hope this info helped you out.

Yes, and they are made by all most every manufacturer, form dirt cheap to ridiculously expensive. The main point is an acoustic body with electric pick ups, either inside the body or under the strings. the same goes for most string instruments like bass and fiddles, mandolins, etc, even some of the wind instruments.
If there is any way to put a pick up on it it has been done. There are also available pickups that fit in place of the bridge on guitars or fiddles, how good they are I'm not sure but you can put them on any instrument you have handy without modification.

Most acoustic guitars have a pick up so that they can be amplified electronically. You can buy pedals that give tons of different effects for both types...If you're learning, just get a cheap guitar and work your way up after you decide whether or not you like it...

Yes there is. It is made by Esteban. He has shown them on the Home Shopping Network (HSN). It has a switch in which you can make it to electric and then you turn it off to make it acoustic. These guitars range from somewhere in the high $100-$500
