Well, dogs are known as "man's best friend" and are also known to be more ferocious, aggressive, and more intimidating then cats. These are characteristics that are usually found in males.
Cats, on the other hand, are regarded as having more self-control, dignity, and properness. Many times you will see cats licking their coats clean. These are characteristics generally regarded as female.

Well, I haven't noticed that, but, dog's personalities (or should I say dogalities?) would most resemble of a boy, and a cat would be a girl. (Dogs like to play rough and get dirty, cats like to be pamperd and are always clean... sterotypical stuff.)

I have to admit that I do this sometimes myself!!! :(
A cat is often perceived as a "feline" or more "feminine" type of animal, and the dog perceived as "masculine" in comparison. Of course, this is not correct.

More men like dogs, more women like cats.
I think the two animals tend to be thought of in this matching way.

cats are known as the "feminine pet"
dogs are known as the "masculine" pets. this could be due to their nickname as "mans-best-friend"
