I'm specifically looking for those that have things like deep-fried okra, BBQ, fried green tomatoes, grits, etc., on the menu. (I'm not interested in chain restaurants.)

I have just the place for you. Try Powell's Place at 1521 Eddy Street in San Francisco.

“ Southern fried chicken, BBQ ribs, salmon croquettes, hushpuppies and fried okra…Amen! This truly is food for the soul, it takes me back to my childhood growing up in the south… everything that tastes good has to be baked, BBQ or fried ;) The décor and the location have changed but the soul of Powell’s Place remains the same. You’ll get southern hospitality and two fresh from the oven corn muffins on the side. The fried chicken and the beef ribs really stand out, the rib meet is so tender it just falls off the bone and the fried chicken is light, crisp and perfect!

That's a tough one. But here's a few ideas:

1. Elite Cafe - excellent ambience, mostly upscale cajun/creole cuisine, but the menu changes frequently and they do feature some southern dishes at times.

2. Big Nate's - best southern barbecue in California

3. Biscuits and Blues - can be a little touristy and of course the terrific music is the main feature, but the food is pure southern - catfish, chicken wings, sweet potato fries, corn and shrimp fritters, fried chicken, pecan and sweet potato pie.
