I found a chalk portrait in the attic. It's of my husband when he was 2-3 and he's 49 now. It's really dusty and I would like to get it restored somehow. I'm sure it's been in the attic for at least 40 years, going by what the family tells me. I'd like to have it done for his 50th birthday which is next February. Plenty of time, I hope. Any ideas?

Much would depend upon the material that the chalk was applied to. A prepared canvas would take a little more abuse than any paper. Also whether or not a fixative was applied over the chalk would determine how easy the job.

Test a portion of the artwork with a lint roller sheet folded to a point. Do this at an edge where no chalk was applied. If this picks up the dust and no background, your job might be easy.

If you want to be absolutely sure of getting this done correctly, however, you must have a professional do it. A fine arts museum could point you in the right direction.

The following is an idea, and only to be thought about, and not done unless researched.

Perhaps you could put plastic wrap over the chalk, and and wash the frame?

That was pretty bad, wasn't it...

Without seeing the item myself, I can only advise you to consult with a professional art restorer. Look in your yellow pages or search the web for one in your area. It shouldn't be too expensive, assuming the work is on paper.

I think your idea of making it a gift for your husband is great! He'll love it. Way to go.
