♡I've been told it's for a number of reasons... One being security as already mentioned. Then there's the durability factor, they're good for long trips abroad. Hard type luggage prevents things from getting smashed- everything arrives safely and in one piece. Souvenirs are important in Japan. And often many goods, some expensive are bought on these trips. I've also heard from some people that it's easier to keep the "hard type" in Japan as opposed to the "soft" material type because Japan tends to be humid and the soft type have to be stored more carefully so that they do not get "mold or mildew". I live in Japan and most of my friends use the "hard type", they feel safe and confident traveling with that type. I'm in Japan and I just bought and use the soft type on rollers here. I have never had a problem with mine and I go from Japan to the USA often. I love to shop while in the USA and I think the soft types gives me more room for stuff too!(*^o^*) I think that if you ask most Japanese, they'll all come up with their own personal reason for liking the hard type. ☆I asked my friend once and she said she just likes the way it looks, it's fashionable and....!♡

Most of the luggages, they put souvenirs that is breakable.using hard cover the more protection you could get,
I never had broken stuffs since I started using one, I could even sit on my luggages on the airport and not to worry of making it messy or even place my computers inside or cameras. when you are in long trip, bags always have thrown or transfer from any places without your supervision. sometimes they would ask to put it on other carrier so there's more spaces on small carriers and you can't do anything about it, so I make sure i have the hard cover.
It is not about the better spaces you could have but the better protection that counts..

More room however less security. the soft ones are easier to cut and take your stuff. This happens many times to people. Also the hard luggage's weigh more BUT have more security.

Most Japanese pack light. And the hard luggage just looks better. It is about how the luggage looks. It also protects better.

Offers good protection from knocks. But if you notice, it is almost like a fashion statement for them. See their matching hand carry luggage or even their purse and what else! This seems to be something Japanese likes to do.

All valid reasons above.
However, when shopping for a new suitcase in Japan I discovered it is pretty much all that is offered. Very, very, few soft cases in the stores to select from in the first place.
