The trip, dependent upon which types of trains you take, will last between 6 hours 15 minutes - 7 hours 30 minutes. I lived in Germany for a number of years and always used their National train system Deutsche Bahn to book my train travel in advance.

One especially important point is that you should ALWAYS book a seat on any long train rides. Your ticket only assures that you can get onto the train, but you'll have to reserve a seat to avoid possibly getting kicked out of an already reserved seat by a local.

Seat reservations usually only cost bout 5 Euros for an entire one-way trip, and are well worth it when the train gets crowded.

One last point is the quality of trains - it will cost you a little bit extra (maybe 5-15% more for a ticket), but book an ICE train if you can. Not only are they the fastest and most comfortable, it's pretty cool to be flying at 160mph through the German countryside feeling like you're floating on air!
