I am thinking of relocating to the East Coast, because I like how people are more social and friendly on the east coast, as opposed to the independant, socially-inept west. :)

I was wondering what cities/towns would be good choices for a single professional in early 30s. Need close access to sailing (ocean or lakes), but also would ideally like hiking to be available withing a day's drive, if possible. Culture, excellent food/nightlife, standard of living are all important. I like the friendly sophestication of Miami and Europe because they also social/enjoy being with others. Of course, a pool of eligible gentlement would be important, not just a family atmosphere. Essentially, vibrant and friendly with future.

Of couse, Miami, Atlanta, NYC are possibilities.

But there are many great towns that I just don't know about. What do you think? I have heard that Charleston, SC may be good. Other towns in Florida? What is Jacksonville like? Destin? Other towns in GA

You may like some of the small/mid-size cities in North Carolina. All these places have lakes that aren't too far away because cities need reservoirs, and they usually turn them into recreation areas too. All are on Interstates so they can be close to other cities too. And these places are CHEAP to live in.

Greensboro is up-and-coming with about 225,000 and more things to do every day, and is situated between the mountains and the coast (@1-2 hours to mountains and 4 to coast).

Winston-Salem is smaller but has a vibrant art scene and is located close to Greensboro. It's a little closer to the mountains.

Charlotte is big--the biggest NC city with over 500,000 and growing. I think it's bigger than Atlanta, though Atlanta may be prettier, honestly. But Charlotte gets all the great bands and has lots to do. Carowinds amusement park is there. I hear it has good nightlife but haven't actually checked it out. It's closer to the mountains than the coast.

Raleigh is the second-biggest city, located in the Triangle area that also includes Durham and Chapel Hill. Raleigh gets good bands too, and is closer to the coast (perhaps 2-3 hours). It's the state capital and a research center so it has better opportunities for career professionals than some other places, I think. Chapel Hill is a fun town centered on a university, though not so big, and it is located close to Raleigh. These places have good nightlife.

Many people like Asheville, which is a small city in the mountains. It has a nice downtown and lots of mountain-hippies. A nicer climate, usually. Many rural areas nearby.

I'd also second the idea of Philly--visited there and its surrounding areas many times, and it's very cool.

Philadelphia! Big city with all the big city amenities (great city living, nightlife, restaurants, cultural activities) but it feels like a small town. You're close to the Jersey shore and the mountains (maybe a 1 to 2 hour drive) for the beach or hiking and skiing. You're and hour and a half south of NYC and about 3 hours north of Washington, but the cost of living is much less expensive here. You really can't get better than Philadelphia! (They ought to pay me for this stuff.)
