The manual's not totally clear on this point, and I want some WarioWare!

I think the manual says to charge the battery before playing for the first time. Besides, it is a short charge. Nothing over 4 hours. I think the battery is about 1/2 full so we're talking a 2-hour charge.

It's not reccommended when your Nintendo DS's battery is charging for the first time, but you can play your DS while the battery's charging. In the instruction manual for the game "Mario Kart DS", it actually recommends doing this while using the WiFi feature in the game.
However, playing the DS while the battery's charging will not only mean that it will take longer to be charged up, but doing this too much will shorten the battery life.
The best thing to do is to wait until after you Nintendo DS's battery is fully charged before you play any games on it. You won't be able to play any games on it when you turn it on for the first time, because you'll have to program it. Not only that, but you have to have a screenname for yourself. Only after you do all that can you play a game on it.
Also, when you charge it for the very first time, it takes about 3-5 hours to charge.
