For 30 years I never had a problem. I had taken a antihistomine pill before driving from Washington to NYC. This pill made me jumpy and at Baltimore I was unable to keep the car on the highway. I went from automatic to manual as a driver. I left the car in Baltimore and took a train home. Since then my highway problem has gotten worse and worse. I am seeking a way to overcome this. I want to drive on highways and get rid of this fear. I will consider retaing an expert if one exists. Any advice is appreciated.

Prescriptions aren't the best thing best all a psychiatrist will give you is something to help with anxiety and often times those knock you out. The key is baby steps. Try to get on the highway and then take the next exist. That way you're only on the highway for a few minutes at most and the more comfortable you get the longer you can stay on the road. Try having a driving buddy some one who is willing to talk you through the process, telling you you'll be fine. I would try to seek a counselor if you can. They'll be able to give you the best advice. Also try to force that fact that it was the antihistamine that caused your original problem not your overall driving ability.

Visit this site. It can help you more. But I would say try to face your fear. Take someone you trust and feel safe with that knows about your fear. Drive with them on the highway. Tell them you are very scared and if you cant handle it you will pull over so they can drive. If you try to face your fear, not just once, but keep trying. Tell yourself you have to. And when you are driving and scared, remember there are so many people driving right now, and they are all ok so nothing will happen to you. If this doesn't work, maybe seek professional advice. I know there is medication if this is interfering in your life and if you can't overcome your fear any other way, maybe a professional could help recommend and prescribe a medication that will work. Good luck, and dont give up.. You are not the only one afraid to drive on highways, and with a little persistance and confidence, you can overcome this!!!
