I would like to her from people outside the US as well as Americans.
What do you think of The United States?

Is it still a great Country, or someplace you'd be embarrassed to say you were from if you went abroad?

Why is it great or not so great?

YES, it is greatest country in the world.....bar non. Not without warts - but which country isn't. Why is it great?
Freedom
Generose
Diverse
You can go coast to coast and thru middle America and still find each State to be unique - in customs. food, culture.
Good, good peole. No matter how much we are trampled on, hated, etc....we are STILL the first to step up to help.
The 4seasons
The festivals
The good hospitals and medical care

Taxes are as great as they used to be, but still not as bad as some socialist leaning countries.

If you meet the legal qualifications, you can become President - you don't have to be rich or have a title or anything.

We have a BIG middle class.

You can own a home - no matter where you are on the ladder of life - if you can't afford it, you can go thru Org such as VA or HUD....it is the american dream and it can happen here.

I could go on and on...but you get the picture.

America is what is has always been. America. Some many outsiders used to wanted, and still do want, to live the American dream. I guess if you move to this country from an underdeveloped country it can seem really great. Then, there are the people who want to hate on America even though they've never experienced it. For example, some people from other countries base their opinions on what our president does and what they see in the news.
America is a place....

where prostitutes get murdered because some people are too cheap to pay

where people sell crack on the streets and get young kids addicted to illicit drugs

where there are gangs

where fifteen year old girls get pregnant and live off welfare.

BUT, America is still the land of the free.

Where....

you can be open and have the right to free speech

you can get an education and have opportunities

you can raise a decent family and enjoy the pleasures of life

you can practice your own religion, have your own culture, and be any kind of person

America might not be a perfect country, but it's still a great place to live. While there are a lot of people that make this country look bad, America still has deeply rooted traditions and some decent people. I'm not saying that we are better than other countries, but at least we as Americans we can usually admit that we aren't a perfect country.

I think it is still the best option out of all the options. However we are losing some of the great things that this country was based on. One being a melting pot. I believe that building the wall on the Southern border racist and unfounded. Remember that the 9/11 terrorist came over from Canada, and didn't they recently brake up another terrorist plan. Hey but don't worry they are safe because they are white. The second ties in closely with the first, Large Corporations. It is because of the large corporations who do not pay fair wages that this immigrant issue is an issue. I believe that if you pay everyone who works in this country a minimum wage, then immigrants wouldn't be a factor. I could go on for hours but I am sure you don't want me to ramble.

If you compare present-day America to all the other countries of the present-day world, America is still the greatest country in the world. However, if you compare present-day America to America of 100 years ago, you will see it is not so great. In the past 100 years, socialist thinking has overtaken individualist thinking. The government has become invasive and totalitarian. We've replaced the gold standard with fiat money. There are endless bureaucratic regulations that impede technological progress. The Bill of Rights is freely violated nowadays with countless unconstitutional laws. In short, all of those things that made America great are gradually fading away.

Yes, America is the greatest country in the world!! We have freedom and no one can replace that. However, there are some things that could be worked on a little bit better like the economy, jobs, the government, but other than that I love it!!

I AM PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN!!!

It has its ups and downs. I think it is a wonderful place to live and I am proud of the people who work so hard and are so generous with others in need. I am extremely alarmed by some of the things that have been done in our name. I hope we start to hear more good news about our country soon. This is a sad time to watch the news.

Personally I think America is the Worlds number 1 problem. I'm not referring to its people but rather its leadership and its political mindset. America is a very young and uncultured country, it takes a thousand years for a country to develop its own culture. It is very militaristic and materialistic with right wing fascist tendencies. It denies its own people and leaves them without and impoverished. America has appointed itself as the World's policeman and was unelected in such a role, she still has much to learn. This illegal and unjustified war in Iraq, against the UN's wishes is doing much to destroy the international reputation of America. I would be ashamed to be an American citizen. My partner works at a local Western Australian university with lots of American academics who are embarrassed to be American. George Bush is a very uneducated man and knows nothing of foreign affairs and he is causing much hurt and pain in the World. I am so glad I'm not American. Jules, lecturer. Australia.

Great is in the eye of the beholder. In this case, yes America is still great. We have a problem with our present government and we are not look upon to kindly in many parts of the world. But with each election things and conditions change and we always have the hope that each election wil leave us better then the one before. In this case it has to because it just can't get any worse. I hope.

Absolutely, America is still great. Although the Democrats would have you think otherwise.

The Democrats have to make America look weak, including our Military and Economy. They do this because they have to convince the ignorant that America needs new government, Democratic of course, who can make it all better.

We are a strong, proud nation. I am proud to be an American.

It depends on what you mean by saying great.
Yes, it has greatness, great buildings, movies and arts are great...who hasnt been raised watching hollywood movies and disney cartoons? NYC is an amazing spectacle, strong economy too.
I dont think it is a great country ethic wise because all of the above was achieved by exploiting other cultures and nations and by killing a lot of people, and it still goes on...
