Black lacks "hue" and "brightness". It can mean sullen and hostile; dark. It can mean evil or wicked. It is also the hue worn for mourning the dead.
We say the night is black and forebodeing. People who have had a near-death experience say they have seen a white light and feel peace.
Therefore, if black is evil and white is good, the only thing left in-between might be called gray! Which is where most people find themselves - caught between evil and good. Black is not a color nor is white. Black and white have been from the beginning, just as evil and goodness have been here since the beginning of time.

actually black is not a color... and so as white.
black is a blending of all colors (combination of all three primary colors using a liquid paint or could even combine food coloring in a glass) and white is the absence of color when dealing with light.
black blends to get darker shades while white when blended, gets the lighter one.
but deeper meanings, this at least might help you.
The Ultimate Dark:
considered the negation of color, black is conservative, goes well with almost any color except the very dark. it also has conflicting connotations. it can be serious and conventional. the color black can also be mysterious, sexy, and sophisticated.
The Nature of Black:
black is the absence of color. in clothing, black is visually slimming. black, like other dark colors, can make a room appear to shrink in size and even a well-lit room looks dark with a lot of black. black can make other colors appear brighter.
The Culture of Black:
in most western countries black is the color of mourning. among young people, black is often seen as a color of rebellion. black is both positive and negative. It is the color for little boys in china. black, especially combined with orange is the color of halloween. in early westerns the good guy wore white while the bad guy wore black. but later on good guys wore black to lend an air of mystery to themselves.

Black means different things to different cultures.
For the West, it is a color of sorrow. For the Asian cultures it is an attainment of a high status or goal.
It is true that a lot of negative phrases revolve around black.

black... in terms of light, on computer screens, means no colour, it constitutes of no Red, no Green and no Blue... or zero RGB, ie no colour/light.
black... in terms of paint, on printers, means combination of full Cyan, full Yellow and full Magenta, or 100% CYM, but that is not true Black in paint. thats is why some colour printers add another Black cartridge into their ink module.
in contrary, white in light consists of all Red Green and Blue lights to form a spectrum white. but in paint white is no Cyan, no Yellow and no Magenta, or no colours at all...
so to explain what is black depends on how you are viewing and from which perception.
add: but as what you see... any colour is a reflection and deflection of certain light that reach you retina. with certain gradient and tones you will see the 3D object in variation from black to white, with steroescopic vision you will see the distance and depth of the object, even they are virtual. in a no light situation, you will see darkness.

Black can mean alot, actually. It just depends on what you are talking about. If you're talking about emotions, that would be sadness, and anger, because gray is depretion. Whit is carefree and pure. So on so forth.
