I have no objection to capitol punishment. I agree that if the criminal is truly guilty, beyond a shadow of doubt, then by all means, eliminate him from society in the most expeditious manner available!
Unfortunately, the modern US legal system isn't perfect. There have been several cases in the past where a person convicted of a crime and sentenced to death has later been proved innocent of that crime.
Would you want to be the one who pushes the button on an innocent man?

I agree with keallineage; it's differences in the interpretations of moral values. Personally, I disagree with the death penalty. I think it is wrong to kill people, period, end of story. It's wrong for an individual to kill another person other than as self defense, and it is wrong for a collective of people (the government) to kill someone as well. Since there are other alternatives (incarceration) to killing criminals, it is not self defense, although in a more primitive society, the Death Penalty may be considered self defense, because there is no practical way to guarantee incarceration for life.
Although I personally would love to see some of these heinous dirtbags who do hideous things to children dead, I don't think that I, or anyone else, has the right to actually kill them. But I do understand why others may feel differently than I do, and view the death penalty as self defense. So while I disagree with it, I accept it as a part of a free society. The majority rules, not me.

I think most people feel that way,but hey,It Is Punishment.Life Imprisonment is preferable to the State stooping to do the same damn thing the criminal did,and studies have shown that it is actually cheaper to keep a criminal alive for life than to condemn him to death. It boils down to this.Would you rather pay prison guards,or Lawyers?Prison Guards are a whole lot cheaper.
As to planning escapes, have you seen Maximum Security? It ain't like the movies, and there is very little chance to escape. And in this day and age, where are you going to escape to?
"Doctor Death",Dr. Kevorkian, the guy they put away for helping people commit suicide, had a very good idea;He took a petition around to death row inmates, and got them to offer their organs to an Organ transplant service. In his plan, they would simply be put under, their organs removed and allowed to die "On the Table".But this was simply too barbaric for government.,they simply wanted to kill somebody.Never mind that every convict's body could impact as many as 9 people's lives in a positive way.
Eyes, kidney's,liver, heart, lungs, even skin and bones are regularly tranplanted, and as long as the convict had a clean bill of health, who cares?

Same reason ppl get all out of whack over abortion - has to do with divided beliefs on what is moral or not for society as a whole.
