Anything to do with sexuality and religion seems to get them going.

Both together and you're on a winner, so something like...'Are all born again Christians gay?' would probably do it.

Of course in itself this is not a provocative question, but some people are very uptight for some reason about both their religion and sexuality and they tend to react irrationally.

To answer that honestly, both are provocative, then it depends on how people take the question.
calm minded people would take the question as a second degree question so won't get mad easily.
easily-touched people would find it aggressive and respond in the same way or even worse.
but it's a vicious circle :
provocative questions can lead to provocative answer which is led to another provocative answer and never end 'til someone stops the problem...

Well that in and of it's self is a very provocative question, and no it won't necessarily provoke a provocative answer

The most provocative question is the one asked by the most famous person. See Yahoo's "Ask the Planet" celebrity questions. No doubt.

The first thing that came to mind was 'something connected to religion, sex, sports, or politics' --- We usually have very strong opinions about those and any question related to them puts us on the defensive, thus to reply provocatively. Still, of the four named before, I believe that religion is the strongest.
I have been raised Anglican (Church of England, of course), and have had people asking me about my religion and I ipso facto start raising that wall between us. Ridiculous at this time and age, I know... but can't help it. Same with sex (heterosexual female), sports (Viva Manchester United!!), and politics... I used to agree with Tony Blair about many issues, but since he joined forces with that idiotic George Bush I lost 99% of my respect for him. Also... I think that ANY question asked provocatively is bound to provoke the same kind of answer - with reason!

Anything which questions a deeply-held, but unprovable (and therefore irrational) belief. This covers all religions, philosophies, and every other lie our parents told us.
E.g.: Noah's ark. Do you know how big that damn thing would have to be? Or, Cain went to the land of Nod, with his wife and family (sound of stylus pulled from record)... where did they come from?

I would have to agree that it would have to be a religious question.
Religion is sacred so the more of a heretic you are the nastier the replies will be.
Some people can't ignore the bait.

Racial or religious subjects tend to get people the most riled up. More so even than politics.
