Well let's see - the Romans tried Republicanism, but it couldn't contain the ambition of wealthy men, so that's out.
The British tried Imperialism, but that relied on subjugating the people who lived in a place and grinding their faces in the mud, so that wouldn't work.
They also tried Parliamentary Democracy with a Monarch on Top, which much like a bad cup cake is soggy, unsatisfying and ridiculously ostentatious.
The Russians tried Communism, and you needed three requisition orders and a bribe before you could buy a loaf of stale bread on a Tuesday.
The Germans tried National Socialism which of course was ludicrous in the extreme and gave rise to some seriously dodgy facial fur, a la Charlie Chaplin.
The Americans have tried...well, basically Government by Corporation, which is an interesting idea, but would mean everybody getting McJobs and our island becoming the seventh mall from Tahiti.
So I'm recommending Lalalalalaism...a brand new form of government where the Queen of the Island can listen to everyone, take the advice she likes and stick her fingers in her ears like a child and go "Lalalalalalalalalala I can't hear you!" whenever she wants to...so I guess that's Presidentialism really...

With a small enough population (less than a couple dozen), you could possibly have something close to communism work, but as your population builds it will be totally impractical. It really depends on who is setting it up. I'd love to be a totalitarian dictator, but it's just not practical for me and - besides - I like the idea of being popular, so I'd go with a democracy.

I think maybe I have played Tropico enough times that I might be able to get it...

Either way, they could call me "El Presidente."

I would say a true democracy. Not what the United States has which is not a democracy but a Representative Democracy. A true democracy where every citizen must be aware of what is going on in the nation-state, and the policies that the nation-state must look at it.

A Republic with Democratic tendencies. The reason, The united States of America founded our country on it, and has grown and thrived on it for over 200 years.

If it was MY island, then I'd want a true democratic monarchy (not like UK where monarchy is figure head).

That way I keep my power (no elections - since it IS my island) but I am also not the ONLY ONE having to deal with running everything (and I would like my subjects to have a say in their lives too).

If I was to go to Marianne's Island, I'd want a true democracy (Ancient Greece), not a democratic republic (USA). (because I want a say in everything.)

First, I think that any true democracy will eventually fall from within. See the link for details.

Personally, I like the idea that Robert Heinlein espoused in his book "Starship Troopers', until you've put your butt on the line for your country you have no say in how its run. (Please note that I said the book, are not the movie. The movie glosses this over with very little explanation)

Rule as a dictator with an iron fist. Anyone who disagrees shall be crushed. Have a large military at your disposal. You should govern like that.

It would be dubbed, "Mariannism" and it would be based on a share and share alike system, no trade, no taxes, and no laws, just people helping people, and of course Gilligan would be Marianne's court jester, the Skipper would be her lover, the Professor would be in charge of agriculture, health needs, and safety issues, the Howell's would be Marianne's Hut servants, and Ginger would be in charge of entertainment, and provide free sexual relief for all;) LOL
