I'm pretty sure MnG is wise enough to distinguish those who should be invited from those who shouldn't. If I were her I would go for the people who are most loyal. In times of trouble, in times of need and in times of dispair, it is always good to have those you trust close at hand. Besides, they may have some good ideas to bring to the table. I mean, even an island bum can find the easiest way to get something done, no? Perhaps he can share this talent with the others.

I think you would have to prove that you have skills that would be useful and would benefit the civilization. Some of my friends would be able to help. Other ones would, well, just wouldn't.I like to think that I am reasonably useful but in a generalized way. I am pretty strong for a woman and could help lift barges and tote bales.
I did volunteer to herd kittens.I don't know how useful this is to an island society but I seem to do it all day.

I can think of some women that could help me populate an island, but mostly I can do a lot of things on my own. They just have to be smart enough to learn.
There's all this talk about people, but you might want to consider what SUPPLIES will be needed! It really depends on the size of the island and the amenities! Otherwise it could end up looking like a bad version of Survivor... You know, the one where they all die...

Already done my fair share of begging and wheedling, but let's face facts - there are very few people you already know who would be worth taking with you to a new society. Apart from my Cariad, my friends (real-world ones I mean) amount to one sports journalist, one production editor, one poet, one witch and a couple of shipping safety inspectors. Know a couple of professors, but not sure I'd be entirely thrilled to spend the rest of time on an island with them, so I guess I'd be auditioning for shipmates...
Where's Jeff Probst when you need him?

I would become friends with people who could actually help me and invite them to help me start a new civilization.

Neither. I would pick some gorgeous women that I did not know and practice polygamy. If I had that, plus some fruit trees, I'd be set.

I offered the granny role and it has been gratefully accepted. Now I can be part of the Grateful Dead, it seems. :))
What use she will get out of me I have no clue.

But of course!
I'll invite all my friends, though I don't think we would get very far.
