Mother - okaasan - お母さん
Mom - haha - 母
Slang for your own mom - ofukuro - お袋

When refering to your own Mom, say "haha."

Call your mom "okaasan" to her face.

Use "okaasan" to talk about/to other people's moms.

When in doubt, just play it safe as use "okaasan."

"Mother" is "haha" if you are talking about her to someone else, but "Okaasan" if you are talking to her, or if you are talking about someone else's mother.
