Ali, nephew of the prophet, Mohammed.
For the same reason so many Hispanic males are named Jesus.
It's a mark of A) respect, B) hope that the namesake will at least TRY to be as good as the original.

I hav 4 middle eastern guys in my home, and only one is close to al, his name is Ali Mohamed, and he is a precious little 2 month old. alot of arabian guys will find an english name close to their real name, it is usually really short, just to avoid racism.

it's not a shortcut for allah, the "al" means the, and is part of the last name. like "el" in spanish, which actually get it from arabs who once lived in the southern part of spain.

Kathy was right, named for Allah, their god.
In the christian bible, there are many names ending in "-el," short for elohim, or their god.
In the present age, there are many who are named after bible characters.
It seems to be usual practice to name people or have names after divinity or good people for good fortune and blessing.

the al means "the" bin means "son of". so when someone is named al-jaafar bin hussain for example, it means "the" jaafar (who is) "the son of" hussain. for a girl al isnt used but bin is replaced with binti.
