Snapping turtles lay 20-40 eggs that hatch in early autumn.

The eggs of snapping turtles and any turtles for that matter hatch depends on the temp and humidity. Usually, they hatch in late August and early Sept. If you live in the the northern states on in Canada, snapping hatchlings will overwinter in the nest and come out in late May or early June. So, the snapper hatchlings you see now, are last years eggs.

here in northern Ohio snappers lay at the end of May till first of June. They incubate roughly two months. I have never heard of egss wintering and don't really think that is possible but I may be wrong.
