My Pentium III PC 1Ghz, having 128MB RAM & 40 GB HDD partitioned into 2 logical partitions (C & E drives) of 20 GB each with an older HDD (4.3GB D drive), is currently having Win 98 SE as operating system.

I would like to try dual booting preferably XP or else Win 2K.
Whether dual booting will slow down my PC? Do I need to increase my RAM? Which OS should I go in for? On which partition should I install the new OS?

Dual booting itself will not slow your PC. However running XP on your machine will slow it down. If you are going to install XP then I recommend no less than 512MB of memory though 256MB is passable. But, I won't touch a computer that doesn't have at least 1GB of memory. If you don't want to spend money to upgrade your memory then I recommend using Windows 2000. Windows XP and 2000 are basically the same operating system but Windows XP has a few more features (and the GUI is much nicer).
