The person behind the counter is most likely a postal clerk. You will very rarely find the "Postmaster" (correct name for either a man or a woman) behind the counter waiting on customers. They have a lot more to do than sell you a stamp!

The Postmaster is the individual who runs the Post Office itself. The employee of the Post Office behind the counter most likely is not the Postmaster. The person behind the counter, be them male or female are postal workers or postal employees however you want to word it. If a female is the head (top boss) at the post office she is still considered the Postmaster, as Postmaster is the job title. Just like a doctor is a doctor and not a doctoress. I hope this helps...

She would be a postmaster. The "ess" ending, while still in use, is considered archaic and somewhat a vestige of another era. For example, do we call a female judge a "judgess" or a doctor "doctoress"?

The person behind the counter is a CLERK no matter the sex. My husband works for the post office.

it's Postmaster.

But if you suspect your local female postmaster is a PC twit, it'd be safer just using Postmistress.
