There are so many teach-yourself-guitar books out there that it would be hard to pick one particular book as best. You might want to just go to Borders and look through them to see what seems most understandable to you. Try the Mel Bay books, or the For Dummies books.

What you need to buy:

- an electric guitar
- a guitar cable
- a practice amplifier
- an electronic tuner
- a guitar case or gig bag
- extra strings
- if you are going to be playing from a book, you'll need a music stand

Big hint: do NOT skimp on the actual instrument. Cheap $99 guitars abound, and they usually suck big time. A crummy guitar is hard to play and will discourage you quickly. Get a good entry-level instrument. Personally I recommend the G&L Tribute Legacy. Reasonably priced and very high quality for the money.

Another big hint: Develop a relationship with a good local music store. Don't buy from a big-box store like Wal-Mart or Guitar Center. The local store will be a little higher priced but the service is worth it, especially for a new player who will need lots of advice and technical help. They will probably do a much better job of setting up the guitar to play right, too.

Final big hint: Stick with it. Like anything else that requires developing skills, there will be a period at the beginning where everything you try to do comes out frustratingly wrong and makes your fingers hurt. Just buckle down and keep at it anyway until you get over the "hump." That will happen surprisingly soon if you persevere.

you may consider buying a teaching video/DVD instead of books. It really helps when you see & hear when first learning.
You can buy a "starter pack" guitar set that will have everything(guitar ,amp, cable, strap, tuner) you need including a book or video. Just look on-line, there a lot of music stores that sell from $99,but you get what you pay for !!! so if you can spend a more it will be worth it.
And don't get frustrated it's going to a take a while to learn & your fingers will be sore.
