It is called "da vinci code" because first, the author chose to name the book so. He might as well called it the "magdalene saga" or the "the truth of early divinity" or whatever. However, Dan Brown named it so because the book starts with the clues that Dr. Robert Langdon, one of the character finds in the paintings of Da Vinci namely the "mona lisa" at the Louvre and "last supper" in Milan behind the killing of the famous curator.
Thats is when the story delve into historical events such as the creation of the knight templar, their affluence and then then emmidiate massacre, the motive behind all the events and Templar supposedly, getting away with a few biblical scroll from Jerusalem. The "scroll" is guessed to be the gospel of agnostic which details the intimacy between jesus and magdalene. This then concludes to widely held belief by the french that Magdalene fled to southern france and gave birth to Sara.
Its a book of fiction but its then gives us a lot of historical facts. A lot of them derived from the previously released "holy blood holy grail". The quest for the "grail" is not for that holy chalice but for "holy blood" or the true descendants of jesus christ.
Its is a controversial topic because it portrays jesus and very very human and someone who had sex and gave birth and Mary magdalene, the famous prostitute in other gospels, as his most loved apostle and his lover.
The book is a good read if and its easier to understand now that i've given u the gist. The movie however has got too much criticism from the "critics" but i think overally it's meant for die hard fans.

Well, its quite a detailed answer you require and I am only going to summarize very briefly. DaVinci was a painter, maybe one of the best of his time, who was commissioned by the Catholic Church to liven up some of its churches with his beautiful art work. In his "Last Supper" painting he placed the whore Mary Magdalen right beside Jesus, while separating the twelve apostles into groups of three. Some one got this idea that Jesus must have had relations with this prostitute, and if so there must have been a child, and if so that line(family) must surely be still going, and if so they must now live in France(?). It may be true, but I doubt it.
I think it is meant to be a good "story" as it gives hope to those that believe there will be a second coming of Christ, and that he may even be in-fact directly related to Jesus of Nazareth. Now if you've ever read Lord of the Rings or seen the movies this sounds alot like Aragon, who returned to the "Throne" as a direct descendant of Isildur almost 3,000 years later. Good vs. Evil always makes for a good story, and mega $$$ .

No, it is not 'true' history. As to other comments, the book and movie are also controversial because the man did not do his research, yet still goes running around claiming he did. He made errors not even a freshman writing a paper at 2 am using only wikipedia would make. Simple stuff. Important stuff. Easy stuff to look up. And that is just from the history perspective! I don't even know what art historians think!
