Chances are that they are looking for nesting areas. Pigeons, swifts and swallows will all nest in garages if given the opportunity.

They're looking for a place to build a nest. Be careful - the light bulb covers on your opener are a perfect place for them. If, for some reason, the light bulb stays on for any length of time and gets hot, it can actually catch the nest on fire. Although there's not much in an opener that will burn, it can be messy.

They possibly have no where to go so once they have found your garage, they want to have a nice place to stay and so to solve this, possibly put some food outside of your garage that they might like, so they don't go inside of your garage if they are disturbing you.
