I had the same problem - reloading was the only answer. You should also install AVG Free Edition, Spybot and AdAware to give you almost 100% protection.

Okay, having never had that problem or (any) problem with Windows XP this may or may not work for you. I'm going to ask you to try one thing. Restart your computer and press F8 while it starts booting until you get a screen asking you to start in Safe Mode, select Safe Mode, if it boots and does not give you an error then go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore and restore it back to a point before this started happening. That's my best guess. If that doesn't work you may have to consider reinstalling the operating system.

Also, normally when you start Safe Mode it asks you if you want to run System Restore at boot so if that is the case, do so and select a restore point before this happened. If it does not ask you then follow the steps above.

I'm afraid I have to agree with one of the other answers. You could spend a lot of time trying to restore the files that are corrupt and still wind up having to re-install the operating system. If you have the original software recovery disks that came with your pc, just place disk 1 in your cd or dvd drive which ever one you have and then turn your pc off by pressing in the on-off switch until it shuts off. Then wait at least 1 or 2 minutes then turn your pc back on and follow the on screen instructions to re-install your original software, this will put you pc back into the same condition it was when it was new.

I would guess from reading the other problems that you may want to save yourself a lot of grief and just re-install XP. If there is a lot of files that you need to save then don't format during the install. recover the files that you can and then maybe re-install clean to give you a little more stable OS

You may have to re install your operating system, coz its already corrupted. If it can't be repaired using the recovery disc, you may have to reformat it, and doing so, you will lose all your files and data. You can send your computer for repair to retrieve all your files and data but it'll be expensive.
