Gerbils love to play with cats. Get cat or two and watch how much fun they have playing.

You "let the cat play with it" people are morons, and the gerbilling guy needs to see a psychiatrist.
I'd say buy a liberty ball. If you want him to only roll around one room without a door, those can't roll over a broom. So lay a broom down and he stays in that section of floor.
When they're in the liberty ball, mine would chase the cat. He can't hurt them in the ball so it's great to watch the predator flee from the prey.

they sell these little balls, you can put them in,where they can roll themselves all over the house
gerbils also enjoy fruit and vegetables. However, it is important that fruit and vegetables should be introduced to a gerbil's diet gradually as a sudden large amount of fruit or vegetables can cause diarrhea.

Fruit and vegetables that are safe to feed a gerbil are:

Apple (seedless)
Broccoli
Carrots
Cauliflower leaves and stalks
Cucumber
Lettuce - small amounts occasionally - in excess it can cause liver problems
Parsley - a good tonic

Fruit and vegetables that should not be fed are:

Kidney Beans (raw)
Onion
Potato (raw)
Potato tops
Rhubarb (raw)
Rhubarb leaves
Tomato leaves

One thing your gerbil and you would love is a ball for it to roam around in..Go to petsmart, or your local pet store and ask about a ball for a gerbil to run it..I have one for mine and she loves it! Plus, it allows her to play with my two cats and stay safe at the sametime..
