they look for on the credit check is past utilities, rent, etc. I may have something for my past phone bill on there. Wondered if anyone would know if they would deny me the townhouse

You'll have to ask them. Most probably wouldn't for a single problem account, but every landlord has their own standards.

They do have the right to deny you. What they do more often is make you pay your past due bills before you move in.
